To measure the value of a financial advisor, one must begin with an understanding of the investor returns of the average investor (the “do-it-yourselfer”). Dalbar Research reports that do-it-yourself investors historically underperform the markets over the long-term (4.3% per year for the 20 year period leading up to Q3 2014).

A Vanguard study (The Added Value of Financial Advisors, Nov 2014) estimates that working with an advisor can potentially add “about 3%” of annual return, net of taxes and fees.
